Eavor is celebrating the two-year anniversary of the Derek Riddell Eavor-Lite™ Demonstration Facility

Eavor is celebrating the two-year anniversary of the Derek Riddell Eavor-Lite™ Demonstration Facility on December 4th, 2021. The facility was engineered to demonstrate the key technical components of the Eavor-Loop™ technology and showcases the world’s first viable form of clean, scalable, flexible, baseload capable power.

Eavor-Lite™ consists of two vertical wells, joined subsurface by two multilateral wellbores at a 2.4km depth and connected by a pipeline at the surface. The rationale for this design, which is not intended to be commercially viable, is to build a facility that proves and demonstrates all the critical elements of Eavor’s technologies at a near-commercial scale in the most cost-effective manner.

Eavor-Lite™ was designed to achieve three objectives: i) drilling and intersecting multiple lateral wellbores, is commercially achievable, ii) multilateral wellbores can effectively be sealed using our proprietary Rock-Pipe™ completion technology, and iii) pre-calculating long term thermodynamic performance of an Eavor-Loop™ can be done accurately and validated over time.  Eavor-Lite™ has successfully proven all three of these objectives. Additionally, Eavor-Lite™ has successfully demonstrated water in the system will circulate using only a thermosiphon, without the need for pumping, and that heat delivery at the surface can be managed to provide flexible energy output.

Eavor-Lite™ is filled with essentially potable water. This water was added to the Eavor-Loop™ at the surface and when the system was filled, the water circulated naturally to harvest heat from deep in the earth and deliver it to the surface facility.  In commercial implementations, this heat can be used to generate electricity or to provide direct heat for industrial or commercial purposes like district heating networks.

Since its inception, Eavor-Lite™ has produced ~11,250MWh (over 40,000 GJ). This translates into enough energy to heat 450 Canadian homes for a year, or 225 homes for two years.
