German publication Merkur recently published articles highlighting Eavor’s presentation to the Weilheim City Council, located southwest of Munich and directly east of Geretsried, to begin a feasibility study in the surrounding area.
Having secured mining permission for geothermal exploration in the region encompassing Ammersee, Starnberger See, and Polling, Eavor showcased its ongoing project in Geretsried to provide a framework for a similar venture near the town of Weilheim in Oberbayern.
Dr. Carsten Reinhold, Eavor geologist who is leading the feasibility study, expressed optimism about these prospects, drawing parallels with the successful endeavours in Geretsried.
“The ongoing Eavor project in Geretsried is ‘a blueprint’ for the local area with similar [geological] conditions,” Reinhold stated.
In Geretsried, Eavor’s project aims to deliver 65 megawatts of thermal energy and eight megawatts of electrical energy, thus promising substantial carbon emissions reduction. Eavor achieves this by offering a novel approach to harnessing geothermal energy. By extracting heat from hot rock via conduction, the Eavor Loop™ system circulates a working fluid independently from subsurface rock, eliminating the need for access to hot water typically associated with conventional geothermal and ESG systems. This innovative approach not only enhances efficiency but also minimizes exploration and earthquake risk.
Alexander Land, head of communication, public and political affairs at Eavor GmbH, described the area as promising for this feasibility study. Land explained that it will take at least another year before possible project locations are examined in consultation with the town of Weilheim in Oberbayern and the municipal utilities, as preparing the project is time-consuming.
Mayor Angelika Flock, echoing the community’s sentiments, referred to the project as “exciting” and “very hopeful.” Tillman Wahlefeld, a member of the Weilheim City Council, expressed hope for the success of Eavor’s endeavours, emphasizing the importance of affordable heat solutions for the region. Environmental Officer Stefan Emeis underscored the urgency of sustainable energy initiatives, while Susann Enders highlighted the need to mitigate financial risks for the city.
With exploration licenses spanning across Germany, Eavor is positioned as one of the leaders at the forefront of Germany’s changing energy sector, unlocking the potential for Next-Generation Geothermal to secure local energy autonomy in the country.
