Eavor’s first commercial project in Geretsried, Germany, has captured significant attention, earning the distinction of ThinkGeoEnergy’s most-read story of 2024.
By March 2024, Eavor had drilled a total measured depth of 7,000 meters, with further advancements bringing that figure to 8,000 meters by year-end. With accumulated progress over the last year, Eavor remains on track to generate geothermal power from the site in 2025.
Drilling operations began in July 2023, employing two rigs to operate in parallel and drill 4,500 meters vertically before transitioning into horizontal drilling. Meanwhile, construction of the air-cooled condenser (ACC) units for the site’s ORC power plant, supplied by Turboden, is progressing. Additionally, Odfjell Technology has provided tubular running services, successfully installing 20,000 meters of large-size casing.
Eavor’s success has garnered widespread industry interest and caught the attention of policymakers and politicians—including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who acknowledged the project during its inauguration in August 2024. The milestones reinforce the potential of closed-loop geothermal technology to unlock sustainable power and energy autonomy virtually anywhere across the globe.
